One of the best times at a community garden is when it comes alive with people working together on a good cause.
That’s what happened last Saturday, August 24, when the Manly Vale Community Garden was swarming with volunteers, thanks to a connection of garden member, Tania. Our committee and all members are very grateful for the donation of time and muscle.
During the working bee 46 members of Freshwater’s Church of Latter Day Saints Youth Group achieved the equivalent of several weeks of work in just a few hours. Most were locals and special thanks go to those who traveled from Strathfield, Canterbury and Killara to lend a hand.
This team can truthfully say it moved a mountain.
It was in the form of a whopping 20 cubic metres of mulch that looked, well, insurmountable, when the generous donation arrived from Sydney Metro Tree Services on Friday. But by Saturday there was no trace of the giant pile. Now the network of paths around the garden has been re-surfaced and feels crunchy brand-new underfoot.
The hungry garden beds gorged on a delicious dose of baked compost spread by the youth group; weeds went by the thousands; harvesting happened (yacons) and seeds met soil in perfect time to create Spring magic.
A huge thank you goes to the youth group and their leaders. And to our members who gave up their Saturday to direct operations. We hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as all the garden’s users and visitors will enjoy the ongoing benefits of your hard work.
